What are we looking for?

The material should have some connection with Brighton and Hove, either because:

  • the subject-matter concerns Brighton and Hove
  • the writer came from Brighton and Hove
  • the recipient of the letter was in Brighton and Hove at the time of receipt (for example, war letters from a soldier to his wife in Brighton)
  • The kind of material, which we would like to consider, includes:

Diaries of any kind covering any time period, from previous centuries up to the present day. They may be handwritten or typed; they may be recorded in commercially printed diaries or plain notebooks. They may be detailed or sparsely recorded, have gaps or be continuous. Many people change the way they keep diaries over the years, so a variety of forms and entries is perfectly acceptable.

Personal letters covering any time period, from previous centuries up to the present day. However, please see the note below on copyright.

Printed material only if it forms a part of a larger collection of written personal material. Items which we would accept include ration books, identity cards, various kinds of personal documents such as certificates and awards, membership cards, programmes, invitation cards, greetings cards and telegrams and similar documents.

Scrap books or photograph albums where there is considerable annotation and input from the person putting the book together. An album or scrap book with no captions would not be as interesting as one with, although if it formed part of a collection of diaries and/or letters, we might like to have it anyway.
